Job Description:

Senior Staff Biochemist

Position Overview

The Senior Staff Biochemist position involves the direction and development and/or qualification of in vitro clinical chemistry and/or immunoassay diagnostic products. Assay Development works closely with representatives from other functions through the product development process to design, develop, transfer, verify and validate new or revised products. This position reports to a Director of Assay Development.


A candidate for this position would have responsibility for:

  • Leading the development and/or qualification of assay products for clinical chemistry or immunoassay systems

  • Leading or participating in design control regulated activities such as risk management, design verification, design change, process characterization and validation

  • Representing Assay Development in cross-functional meetings and discussions

  • Collaborating with Key Opinion Leaders

  • Guiding the work of 2-3 biochemists

  • Writing plans, protocols and reports

  • Troubleshooting technical problems

Required Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience

Required experience, education and knowledge/skills:

  • Expertise in Biochemistry, Clinical Chemistry, Chemistry or the Biological Sciences

  • Extensive knowledge of Cardiology/Cardiovascular Disease

  • Experience with clinical studies and regulatory submissions

  • Experience as a technical expert leading projects

  • Team player with the ability to take initiative

  • Required knowledge, skills or expertise:

  • Leadership qualities

  • Broad chemistry/biochemistry knowledge of buffer systems, enzymes, surfactants and preservatives

  • Profiency in cross functional collaborations and team building

  • Effective verbal and written communication skills

  • Word, Excel, Powerpoint experience

  • Flexibility to change priorities to meet business needs

  • Statistical analysis

  • Ability to train/mentor scientists

  • R&D experience working under FDA 21CRF820.30 and ISO 13485

  • Training in design of experiments and six sigma techniques

  • Travel required <10%

Preferred Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience

Preferred, but not required experiences include:

  • Experience with assay systems and evaluation of assay performance

  • Experience in leading and evaluating clinical trials

  • Project management skills


Requires a Ph.D. with 5-10 years relevant industry experience in Diagnostics , Medical Devices or Life Sciences

Knowledge and Experience:

Demonstrates and applies a broad knowledge of field of specialization through successful completion of complex assignments. Successfully applies complex knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of particular area of specialization. Demonstrates knowledge of organization's business practices and issues.Typically 5-10 years of successful experience in related field and successful demonstration of Key Responsibilities and Knowledge as presented above.

Direction of Others:

Provide technical guidance for 2-3 biochemists.

Key Working Relationships:

Intra-organizational and Inter-organizational contacts.
