System Engineer / Information and Digital Technology

The PD SLN Business Unit (hosted by the Process Solutions & Drives Division) provides Oil & Gas, Marine, Fiber and Minerals customers with reliable, safe and environmentally friendly answers to their electrification, automation and digitalization needs.

The Operations Engineering Center (OEC) hosts a Global O&G Engineering Team to develop Oil & Gas Pipeline Solutions. The team has the global responsibility for creative executable solutions to support growth of the pipeline solutions business. The Global O&G Engineering Team supports both global and regional business needs from the Houston, TX, USA office. The Global O&G Engineering Team is comprised of Project Management, Power Distribution, Motor & Variable Frequency Drives, Rotating Equipment, Controls (Unit Control, Stations Control, DCS/SCADA) and Digitalization Expertise.

This Global Team’s mission is the focus on aligning customer requirements, specifications, FEED, and concepts to executable solutions. Such solutions will be used in formal offers to customers. The position will also participate in execution of these solutions in projects or mentor other teams toward successful execution. This may include validation of a team’s capability or competence to execute such projects and assistance in staffing as required.

Specific Requirements

Position Overview:

The intended candidate will be an experienced and well versed IT Professional (Engineer/Technician) focusing on owning and supporting external and internal project requirements (software, hardware, digitalization in nature), specifications, and supporting proposals regarding scope which complement the team’s design of complete drive systems and power systems for customer applications. The Engineer/Technician will be required to work within a team environment where knowledge of the drive, the drive system, and associated mechanical and electrical equipment including pumps, compressors, switchgear, control houses, cooling systems, transformer(s) is extremely helpful. Engineer/Technician will work closely with drafters (local and offshore) to create models and digital twins, and engineering deliverables (documents, document management systems, tools, etc) for the end customer.

Engineer/Technician will at times interface with customers, varying levels of management, global engineering teams, sale reps, vendors, project managers, vendors, factory representatives and field service personnel. Engineer/Technician will execute (individually or as member or leader of an engineering team) highly customized deliverables under minimum supervision utilizing product design guides and guidelines, industry standards and best engineering practices. Engineer/Technician will provide engineering expertise to drafters/designers on highly customized digital deliverables and tools. Engineer/Technician will provide engineering support for Sales, Project Management, Manufacturing, Field Service and Quality Assurance groups during project cycle up to and including commissioning. Engineer/Technician will provide technical content for Customized Product manuals.


•The overview as described above is specifically supported in two critical areas; Department Infrastructure and Project Support. Responsibilities are, but not limited to:

Department Infrastructure

•Support automation and controls laboratory environment with, but not limited to; PC, server and hardware support across start-up, maintenance, upgrades, and testing environments.

•Be key “go to” person for server upgrades and stand-by activities.

•Operate complex software systems for internal Asset Management which include inventory and maintenance/up-keep regarding “own” assets.

•Proactively continue a “start of the art” journey regarding tools for the OEC department which create security, value and efficiency for the department team members.

•Maintain a finger on the pulse of what is new in the world of modeling, digital twinning, asset management, hardware and cyber security which improves internal and external workflows.

•Drive all activities with focus of Product and Solution Security (PSS) mindset keeping pace with the ever-changing field of Cybersecurity measures.

•Act as the keeper/owner of central Project Scheduling, Document Management, Organizational SharePoint, and Websites tools for the department.

Project Support

•Creating 3D and VR Models for proposals, execution, company promotion and life cycle purposes

•Operate complex software systems for external Asset Management which allow the push of requirements to the field (work orders, programs, work flows) and return flow of actual field data regarding assets.

•Engineer/Technician may aid in hardware support of various projects regarding computing power, telecommunications, or SIEMENS automation selection (PCS7, S7 in nature).

•Serve in a quality role to verify project deliverables are in accordance with specified Cybersecurity expectations.

•Be responsible for Scheduling own activities and at times will be asked to act as Project Support in developing external Project Schedules (MS Project).

•Will at times be asked to serve in other Project Support Roles related Document Management as well as other Techno-Administrative tasks.

Required Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience:

•Industry knowledge in various Oil & Gas Pipeline Applications

•Familiarity with E-House/Shelter Design and Manufacturing Support (Integration, Testing, Installation & Commissioning)

•First-hand experience with Graphics, 3D Modeling, Digital Twinning and Virtual Reality based platforms.

•Development capability for Website and Online content.

•Intimately aware of concepts regarding Asset Management and the types of software tools to support activities.

•Must be able to interface with customers and vendors and resolve comments and requested changes to internally-generated and international documents and drawings.

•Strong organization and excellent time management skills.

•Excellent team skills and ability to work effectively in large and diverse (multi-cultural) groups.

•Possess a familiarity with and follow all engineering policies and procedures.

•Strong verbal and written communication skills.

•Quick learner and Ability to mentor and coach.

•Computer skills required: Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, Visio, Power Point, Project, Virtual PC, C++, and possess excellent troubleshooting skills for PC hardware and software.

•Working knowledge of Cybersecurity principles as specified in IEC 62443.Candidate may be asked to obtain certain certifications surrounding Cybersecurity topics.

•Willingness to relocate to Houston, TX, travel domestically and abroad.

Preferred Knowledge/Skills, Education and Experience:

•Familiarity with SIEMENS variable frequency drives (AC & DC) and their applications

•Familiarity in Electrical Engineering concepts, specifically in the areas of power distribution and protection, control systems, rotating equipment controls, substations and onshore/offshore electrical e-house design (Utilities, Lighting, Electrical Wiring, Cables, Cable Schedules, Fire Protection, HVAC)

•Hands-on experience with engineering tools from the AUTOCAD, BENTLEY SYSTEMS and COMOS (Electrical and Walkinside) portfolio.

•First-hand knowledge of web development and collaboration tools such as ADOBE SPARK, WORDPRESS, SHAREPOINT, and AO PROFESSIONAL,

•Experience in NEKTAR DATA SYSTEMS for Asset Management.

•Experience in formal Project Management environment.

•Team Management experience

•SIEMENS and non-SIEMENS product/project experience for competitive and alternative views

•PLC/HMI programming and configuration experience

•Knowledge of Siemens WINCC, S5, S7 and/or PCS7 family of PLCs

•Field service background a plus

General Requirements


BS in Information Technology, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or related discipline required. Experience (military or civilian/industry) can be substituted for education.

Successfully applies complex knowledge of fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures of particular area of specialization.
