Development Support Intern – CAD and Geometry Development

Position Overview (Job Description)

Every engineering simulation starts with a representation of real-world

geometry and we, as an organization, are always in need of more

real-world examples and user feedback. This position will give the

intern the opportunity to use STAR-CCM+ end-to-end, starting with

CAD-based geometry.

The intern will create several real-world examples to both get a full

understanding of CAD features of primary interest (freeform surfacing,

repaired bodies, etc) and to demonstrate theirusage and user concerns

in real-world workflows. This experience will then be leveraged so

that the intern can act as a beta tester of sandbox and development

builds during new feature development.

Responsibilities (Pre-requisites and Essential Functions)

The specific responsibilities associated with the position include:

• Creation of real-world test models for freeform surfaces in

industries not yet addressed by development support.

• Beta-testing of Freeform Surface Feature version 2

•Testing of simulationsusing invalid bodies in order to get a better

grasp of the different scenarios of when an invalid body is relevant or

not. This insight will be used to help guide feature development for

user tools to address invalid/incomplete geometry

• As new feature development continues in 3D-CAD, the intern will help

identify other potential use cases and help supplement beta testing

done by Development Support

• Based on results of the above tasks and the length of the internship,

the intern may also be given additional tasks in support of CAD import

and geometry preparation.

Required Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience (Pre-requisites

and Essential Functions)

Candidates will be expected to meet the following pre-requisites:

• Be enrolled in an accredited four-year engineering program and will

have completed at least the sophomore year as of summer 2017

• Classroom or practical exposure to multi-physics simulation tools for

CFD or FEA

• Classroom or practical experience with at least one commercial CAD

package, preferably Siemens NX, Solidworks, CATIA or ProEngineer/Creo.

• A genuine interest in the simulation of real-world engineering

problems using computational methods

Preferred Knowledge/Skills, Education, and Experience (Pre-requisites

and Essential Functions)

The following skills are preferred but NOT required to be considered

for this position:

• Be enrolled in an accredited four-year engineering program with a

focus on Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or similar and

will have completed at least the junior year as of summer 2017.

• Classroom or practical experience with commercial CFD or Multiphysics

software such asSTAR-CCM+ or Ansys.

• Experience working on both Windows and Linux operating systems.
