The Opportunity

Reporting to a Track Supervisor, the Foreman is responsible for protecting, controlling, and directing various rail infrastructure maintenance activities on active railway lines for work zones that are located within defined railway track limits. This is a full-time permanent opportunity. Your primary work location will be on or about Metrolinx’s Oakville Subdivision.

Key Responsibilities and Functions

  • Obtain proper protection for work activities required within the boundaries of the Canadian Rail Operating Rules (CROR)

  • Conducts daily job briefings to review protection provided and ensure that site-specific instructions and procedures are understood by workers prior to commencing work;

  • Review the site of protected activities during the work shift on a regular basis and consult with Supervisor/foreman third party representative to understand the work being performed, and identify any potential hazards

  • Always maintain alertness throughout the work shift;

  • Install and remove track protection railway signaling devices (flags) at designated locations within work block time limits;

  • Protect workers and the public by keeping workspace free of traffic, and warning oncoming traffic of unexpected situations and/or potential hazards;

  • Communicate effectively with oncoming traffic, workers, other flagmen and Rail Traffic Controllers using established procedures and radio equipment to ensure the understanding of instructions, track protection work and time limits, worksite hazards and other specific site conditions

  • Once briefed, directs the movement of personnel and equipment through work areas

  • Prepares daily timesheets, worksheets and other reports as required

  • Promotes executes and adheres to the company’s safety program, and encourage all employees, sub-contractors and consultants to adopt safety as a culture

  • Other related track maintenance tasks as required.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • 2 years of previous Railway experience in a related role (Track Maintainer);

  • Sound understanding of railway engineering safety regulations, safe work practices and work procedures

  • Certified in Canadian Rail Operating Rules (CROR) and Track Inspection Guidelines (TIGS) is an asset

  • Valid driver’s license of “G” classification (Ontario) or higher;

  • Ability to read/write/speak English;

  • Safety minded work ethic;

  • Ability to work autonomously and adapt to different situations

  • Demonstrate good teamwork and maintain positive interactions with others

  • Must be able endure repetitive physical work activities and lift and carry approximately 60lbs;

  • Computer skills (office suites, form entry, other) (asset);

  • Safety Training and certifications (asset);

  • Available to work on various work cycles with occasional overtime
