Position Overview

The Solutions business segment of Siemens Smart Grid is looking for a senior Power Systems software engineer. The Solutions business segment is responsible for developing large scale enterprise software solutions that include Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), Energy Management Systems (EMS), Advanced Distribution Management Systems (ADMS), and Energy Market Management (EMM). Siemens has a global market leading position in many of these areas and is looking to further build upon that with a healthy investment in R&D. Our customers are mostly electrical utilities of all sizes, ISOs, RTOs, TSOs etc. Siemens Corporation is a U.S. subsidiary of Siemens AG, a global powerhouse in electronics and electrical engineering, operating in the industry, energy, healthcare, and infrastructure & cities sectors.

This position will work as part of a team working on Transmission Network Applications (TNA), Distribution Network Applications (DNA), and the Operator Training Simulator (OTS) within the R&D organization. Some examples of Transmission Network Applications include Power Flow, State Estimator, Contingency Analysis, and Optimal Power Flow. Some examples of Distribution Network Applications include Volt-Var Control, Fault Location, Fault Isolation, and Service Restoration and Optimal Feeder Reconfiguration.

The candidate will work closely with industry leading experts and implement new features that enhance the accuracy, reliability and effectiveness of our suite of network applications both in the transmission and distribution space. The candidate will have the opportunity to work as part of a diverse global team with operations in Minnesota, California, Brazil, Germany, Austria, Turkey, Romania, and India. He/she will be mentored by a principal engineer with significant experience in SCADA/EMS/DMS and also have the opportunity to expand their own skills in this field by learning new technologies. The candidate will also get to interact with customers in order to design custom solutions using Siemens products to help meet unique customer needs.

Specific job responsibilities include the design, development and implementation of new TNA, DNA and OTS features for the Siemens EMS & ADMS platform. The candidate will analyze, design, program, troubleshoot, recommend solutions, perform enhancements, provide technical support, and implement modifications associated with the TNA, DNA & OTS.

The software environment where the implementation is performed involves Unix/Linux OS and Fortran, C, and C++ programming languages. Our software uses Oracle Database.

Knowledge and experience:

• Masters Degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering with special focus on Power Systems. An understanding of concepts like Power Flow, State Estimation, Volt-Var, Contingency Analysis, Fault Isolation, and Service Restoration is required.

• Excellent analytical skills; Ability to learn quickly

• Programming skills – Experience in a programming language like Fortran, C, or C++. Familiarity with relational databases and SQL is desirable.

• Basic understanding of the Software Development Lifecycle including agile development

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills

• Prior experience in the SCADA/EMS/DMS industry is highly desirable but not required.

• 2+ years of experience in a software development environment, university experience is also applicable

• Ability to travel domestically and internationally occasionally
