Wind R&D Loads Engineer

Boulder, CO

Siemens Wind Power retains a strong position in the global market due to its state-of-the-art products made possible by a global team of exceptional employees. We are looking for a highly talented and motivated individual to join us in the field of wind turbine loads. The position will be mid to senior level engineer working in our Boulder R&D office helping to design our next generation of turbine blades and developing new cutting-edge technology.

As a Wind R&D Loads Engineer, your primary tasks will include:

  • Blade design and load evaluation for new wind turbines

  • Computational performance analysis of wind turbines including, controls, loads, structures, aeroelasticity, and aerodynamics

  • Performing load calculations for product development and type approval

  • Testing and validating load calculations on prototype wind turbines

  • Engaging in the early turbine design phase to ensure the optimal turbine design is achieved together with turbine Chief Engineer and Project Manage

  • Acting as load and control coordinator on the large turbine development project

  • Improving aero-elastic modelling and structural interfaces

  • Running analysis tools to test controllers and analyze loads and annual energy production

  • Development of new rotor performance analysis tools and metrics for highly-active aeroelastic rotor designs.

  • Planning and performing validation studies to compare computational analysis with field performance data.

  • Collecting and processing data gathered from a field test turbine(s)

  • Analysis of large data sets, including reporting and presenting analyses

  • Effective interaction, communication, and collaboration with controls, aerodynamic, and structural engineers in a global team based environment, as well as local test and measurement technicians.

  • Writing performance reports for product design specification and certification

Wind R&D Loads Engineer candidates are required to possess the following:

  • MS degree required

  • Educational background in Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace, or related engineering field required

  • Minimum 5 years of professional working experience

  • Knowledge of multi-body-dynamic systems including rigid and flexible elements

  • Programming experience in MATLAB, FORTRAN, C/C++, or similar

  • Experience handling and performing engineering analysis on large data sets.

  • Strong desire and ability to solve difficult technical challenges through innovation, dedication and cooperation with a global team

  • Strong desire to develop and grow under the guidance of senior level engineers

  • Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in written reports

  • Willing and able to travel internationally

Wind R&D Loads Engineer candidates are desired to possess the following:

  • Knowledge of controls theory and controller development

  • Knowledge of loads, controls, structures, aeroelasticity, and supporting analysis tools

  • Computational modeling experience using wind turbine analysis tools such as ADAMS, HAWC, FLEX or FAST

  • Experience in measurement techniques, sensor technologies and data analysis and validation skills including time series and spectral analysis, wind and turbulence measurements, load measurement analysis, noise and power measurement analysis

  • Wind industry experience
