Principal Mechanical Engineer to contribute to new platform architecture definition and development. Contributions are expected at the individual level and also at the strategic product definition level. The person will represent the mechanical engineering discipline for the MDX organization and lead and mentor junior engineers. Must be comfortable in a fast-paced environment. Capable of integrating requirements from the various stakeholders and have demonstrated judgement to balance the needs of cost, quality and time-to-market.

Experienced in RT-qPCR and sample preparation instrumentation development - through education or experience.
Experience delivering successful commercial products where the individual made important contributions.
Experience with all aspects of mechanical engineering applied to delivery of successful products.
Hands-on design capability using CAD/CAE tools such as Solidworks. Advanced CAE tools experience (FEA) is desirable.
Demonstrated creative delivery to design challenges – as evidenced through patents or proprietary process development
Experience with all forms of mass and prototype manufacturing processes - including machined, injected molded, powdered composites, sheet metal, blow molding, extrusions, casting, RIM, and assembled components.
Design experience with fluidic systems highly desirable, this includes positive displacement and peristaltic pumps, valves. Experience controlling fluid transport and control to microliter and sub-microliter levels a in a life science or diagnostic product.
Experience with multi-phase flow .
Experience with magnetism – electromagnets and permanent magnets – design and selection of components is desirable.
Proven experience mitigating heat transfer resistance across subassemblies in a practical system.
Hands-on experience designing peltier based thermal control systems highly desirable.
Be able to create and execute detailed designs, including establishment of tolerances and specifications for parts fabricated with all the major processes listed.
Experience with various motor types, DC , Stepper, linear, and motion mechanisms, including belt, lead screw.
Experience designing systems delivering precise thermal and motion control- temperature control to within 0.01 C and motion control to micron.
Experience delivering high-performance systems in a cost effective manner – meeting or exceeding cost of goods, time to market, and quality targets.
Experience designing and delivering products with optomechanical assemblies and subassemblies – including as many of the following detectors and light sources lasers, CMOS cameras, diodes, PMT’s.and LED.
Experience with purification and separation or enrichment with solid phase extraction in beads, activated surfaces, or packed beds highly desirable.
Heat exchanger design – using lumped parameter, design tables and CAE tools - desirable. Experience with fan selection to meet size, thermal, and noise constraints.
Experience with microfabrication technologies and consumable design to support microfluidic control and transport desirable.
Ability to quickly conceive and demonstrate design features both using CAE/CAD tools and via physical prototypes.
Must have experience designing instrument systems that have sold in the thousands, at a profit, and designing consumables with production volumes in the millions.
Experience in development of products in a life sciences or regulated (CE-IVD, FDA) diagnostic environment is highly desirable.
Strong ability to problem solve - both defining the problem and ability to demonstrate solutions compatible with business objectives.
Hands-on experience ramping up designs in manufacturing including design and delivery of manufacturing test fixtures and calibration systems.
Experiences with worst case analysis of complex assemblies, including multi-lot variability from suppliers, and understands practical first pass yield.
Experience with “green-field” design challenges is required.
Desire to join a start-up effort within a major multi-national corporation.
Should be able to draw on first principles to figure out effective solutions.
• A degree in engineering or physics and a track record of contributing to commercially successful products.
• Ability to understand scientific and systems-level engineering questions and propose and deliver solutions.
• Experience considering variability from supplier raw material through, process, package and transport and aging.
• Ability to work independently and in project teams.
