Principal or Lead Electrical Engineer to contribute to new platform architecture definition and development. Contributions are expected at the individual level and also at the strategic product definition level. The person will represent the electrical engineering discipline for the organization and lead and mentor junior engineers. Must be comfortable in a fast-paced environment. Capable of integrating requirements from the various stakeholders and have demonstrated judgement to balance the needs of cost, quality and time-to-market.
Experienced in RT-qPCR and sample preparation instrumentation development - through education or experience is highly desired. Experience delivering automated fluorescent microscopes for biological applications is also desired.
Experience delivering successful commercial products where the individual made important contributions.
Experience designing and delivering products with electro-optic -optomechanical assemblies and subassemblies – including as many of the following detectors and light sources, low-cost lasers, CMOS cameras, diodes, PMT’s.and LEDs.
Additional desirable experience Includes:
Product development covering green-field concept to manufacturing and service support.
Manage and guide design for regulatory compliance to UL/CSA/TUV/CE with in-depth knowledge.
Application and selection of APD/photodiode/ thermal sensors and circuits, lamps/laser/LED light sources and circuits, high end/low end FPGAs, various levels of ARM application processors.
Classical and modern control theory applied to data acquisition and laboratory system/subsystem control.
Lead and work with junior engineers and quality and regulatory staff for EMC and safety compliance – such as IEC61326 and IEC61010, IEC60601, IEC62304 etc.
Circuit board material selection and detailed design and layout both internally and working with outside firms.
Detailed design to manage EMI
Familiarity with PCBA manufacturing process, understanding ICT and function test requirement and fixtures.
Work with internal and external ICT test fixture developers and proven design for test experience.
Experience with EDA tools – simulate and design high speed digital and low noise high bandwidth analog circuits – experience with SOM design and procurement. Multilayer design and test - > 1 Ghz processors, nano-fempto amp current control
High performance A/D circuits- transimpedance amplifier design
Linear and high speed efficient switching power supply design and selection. Familiar with sourcing power supplies, vendor qualification
Data Acquisition System with USB interfaces, DSP, FPGA, instrument grade amplifiers, isolated differential analog input channels with isolated DC/DC power supply.
Communication protocols/technologies such as CANopen and CAN BUS , I2C and SPI
Analog and/or digital control of - temperature, pressure, flow, mass, current, light, force, charge & pH.
Develop work effort and scope estimates, efficient resource assignment.
Lead electrical engineering efforts mentor junior electrical engineers, contractors and collaborate with outside development partners. Build talent.
Design and develop specialized test fixtures, as needed, to support design and for manufacturing.
Work closely with program managers, scientists, firmware, mechanical and optical engineering teams.
Create technical specification and subsystem requirement specification documents.
Create design documents, design history files, verification test plans.
Participate in FMEA, worst case analysis and verification/validation of product/design.
Transfer of designed products to manufacturing and support any post-launch and service issues.
Must have experience designing instrument systems that have sold at least roughly 500 systems at a profit.
Experience in development of products in a life sciences or regulated (CE-IVD, FDA) diagnostic environment is highly desirable.
Strong ability to problem solve - both defining the problem and ability to demonstrate solutions compatible with business objectives.
Hands-on experience ramping up designs in manufacturing including design and delivery of manufacturing test fixtures and calibration systems.
Desire to join a start-up effort within a major multi-national corporation.
Should be able to draw on first principles to figure out effective solutions.
• A degree in engineering or physics and a track record of contributing to commercially successful products.
• Ability to understand scientific and systems-level engineering questions and propose and deliver solutions.
• Ability to work independently and in project teams.
